“Makeup for those who are already pretty” -The Cut

One of the biggest beauty brands that has taken over the market in the past few years is Glossier, often described as the brand for the modern girl. The brand was founded by Emily Weiss, she believed she was in a great place to begin creating commerce as she knew the market well through interacting with her audience on her blog, ‘Into The Gloss.’ The blog was generating huge views and the launch of Glossier in 2014 could said to be helped by Weiss’ fans. The blog readers had been a key part of the whole process of building Glossier. The brand had an Instagram account that had over 15,000 followers before it even had a logo or a website, this allowed for consumer opinion on all steps of launching the brand. This ensured that consumers were invested deep into their brand story from the get go.
    The Founder: Emily Weiss
Their key consumer was the millennial female, They are the ‘every woman,’ working, not huge amounts of disposable income and too busy to spend their time obsessing with brands. Glossier knew this therefore hey don’t focus on having huge press releases or product launches, they focus on peer-to-peer channels and influencers through mediums like Instagram and youtube. Their consumer was easy to profile as they match the brands ethos, its all about enhancing your beauty and embracing the natural:

Consumer Profile: a 20-year-old university student who cares about their appearance but likes to embrace their natural beauty. They take pride in their Instagram account, follow beauty gurus and go to the gym to keep healthy

Glossier also started their own ‘showroom’, it is much more than just a store as it really was a gorgeous display of all the products. The showroom was a huge success to as it already had so much hype from the e-commerce hype that the company generated. This meant that the move into the product space was a guaranteed success.

I was lucky enough to visit the showroom when I was in New York. The store was a millennial dream, a queue out the door which screamed exclusivity and then a lift to the showroom. It was all in the colour of the branding, pink and white and filled with photo opportunities with mirrors with cute quotes and aesthetic seating areas. It all was aimed at their young, female Instagram loving consumer.

No products were forced at you they were left out and around, allowing you to test and try what you pleased. Even the purchasing process was suitable to the consumer, no queueing, you pay on an iPad and collect your purchase. It was a shopping experience that I really enjoyed. The whole place as well as their product packaging was a photo opportunity, something that is really smart as it spreads word of the brand through the consumers social media. The bags, boxes and all packaging too acts to spread word as people want to investigate the brand further.

I am not an avid fan of award shows but I am a huge fan of music as a whole. I think I have a good gage of the general scene as well as my personal favourite artists. I’m sure I don’t lack bias however I am backed up by thousands of angry twitter users.

The Grammys this year where a sham.

SZA is a new artist on the scene this past year, making huge headlines for huge sales and huge praise. She was the most nominated female artist this year at the Grammy’s with up to 5 nominations and was expected to take a few home. However, my girl was robbed. She won NO Grammys, not even 1. Not even the best New Artist, instead it was given to a girl who had been on the scene for at least 2/3 years.

I am not upset, I’m just disappointed.

In addition, Childish Gambino’s album was critically acclaimed, nominated for 5 Grammy's, praised for being daring and different form many of the R&B albums out there. It was soulful, it was moving and honestly it was brilliant. Especially the main single that caught traction, Redbone. My man Childish went home with only 1 award. When songs that lack meaning such as Bruno Mars, That’s What I Like, winning. Yes, it is a tune but still.

The third victim of the Grammys was Lorde. Inarguably, the girl knows how to write a hit. It’s personal, it’s deep and its performed amazingly over a catchy beat. She was up for best album this year, an album that she spent years working on. It had a huge hit, Green Light, and was such a great album. “How did she do?” You ask. No where near as well as she should have.

What made it all worse? When the chief organiser made the statement that ‘females need to step up’ because males took the majority of awards.  Firstly, how dare he think that the Grammys are actually an objective measure of musical excellence? I don’t know who died and made him king but I’m not having that. So many artists out there are too small to get recognised in the first place, it doesn’t mean they are any worse than those who have made it in the charts.
Secondly, we all know that female musicians are always pulling their weight. If we look at the charts we always see the big female talent up there, but for some reason this guy must have been blind or something.

I think everyone should keep in mind that music awards really, at the end of it all, do mean nothing. Being recognised as talented is a compliment but should not be the sole basis in which talent is judged. It is simply the judgement of, what I imagine to be, a few old men who think their opinions matter.

Corinne Day was a British fashion and documentary photographer who produced a wide variety of works, although I am most interested in her personal investigation project named ‘Diary’ as well as a project compiled by friends after her death titled ‘May the circle remain unbroken’. These projects feature photographs of her friends and herself during very personal moments, such as when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor, in which she eventually died from in 2010. Due to the personal nature of her photography, I see her works as a personal investigation as she captures and displays her very personal moments as a documentary of her life.

The strong red toning in this image gives it an emotive theme immediately as the colour gives connotations of strong emotions. The angle of the image is skewed which gives the viewer a discomfort that fits with the images subject of ‘Tara crying at home.’ The frame and note on the bottom, in what I assume to be Day’s handwriting shows just how personal this collection of images was as the reality of the moment is shown, it was not staged for the photo.

I think this image is very interesting and confrontational in subject as well as composition. The male breaks the black background and disturbs the image, especially with the strong blue of the T-shirt and the red blood seen on his skin. By the model being placed in the middle it does not create harmony in the image, instead makes an uncomfortable feeling for the viewer.

The intimacy of this project inspired me to do a photo shoot similarly, capturing many parts of my summer and collating it into a project like Day’s work.
